"We owe it to our children
to be better stewards of the environment. The alternative?
– a world without whales.
It’s too terrible to imagine."
Ever since I was a child, I’ve been fascinated with whales. When my son was a young child, I would take him to Marine World to watch the skillful and powerful killer whales perform. Now, however, my perspective on keeping these highly intelligent mammals, or any animal for that matter, captive and confined in restrictive habitats has changed (with the exception to the necessary preservation, protection and propagation of endangered animal species).
Our focus should be on educating our children about these amazing and gorgeous creatures in their natural environments through either documentaries or safely in the wild. It is also important to educate our children on being better stewards of the environment.
One way I’m able to connect with whales is through dreams. My dreams with whales have always been memorable. In one particular dream, I stood at the wave line on a beach watching whales swim across the horizon during the sunset.
Dreaming of whales can symbolize the merging of the conscious and subconscious; seeing the spiritual side of existence and understanding the limitless potential and miracles in our lives.
About eight years ago, my son and daughter-in-law invited me to join them on a whale watching excursion out of Monterey Bay, California. Because I easily get motion-sickness, I took Dramamine about halfway into our road trip from the San Francisco Bay Area.
The boat was large with a spacious inside cabin that had plenty of tables and seating – it even had a snack bar. We had a marvelous time, and saw at least a dozen humpback whales.
The most exhilarating part of the excursion was watching the young calves breach. This is one way they communicate with their mothers who are searching for food at a lower ocean level. The calves are telling their mothers, “Come back, I’m hungry.”
When we got home that evening, I was in awe from the nurturing love between the female whale and her calf, and the freedom that these massive creatures have in the vastness of the Pacific Ocean. Also, the realization of their extraordinary communication through sound in the salt water was a spiritual sensation. These feelings have remained with me.
The Power of the Whale
My dreams, experiences and spiritual connection to whales resonate with the following excerpt from Bernadette King’s website: WhatIsMySpiritAnimal.com
“Are you where you need to be? Are you in toxic waters? Is the ocean tumultuous? If so, take hold of the Whale’s Tail with confidence and let Him move you to safety.
“In the Biblical story of Jonah, Whale becomes a redeemer, sacred teacher and transformer. She is the instrument of Jonah’s rebirth and spiritual awakening.
“Just like Jonah, Whale calls us to wake up and realize that there is more to our reality than what we know through our physical senses.
“Traveling with the Whale beneath the waters of our consciousness opens another world in our awareness. Psychic attentiveness bursts forth when Whale surfaces again and we take that first breath together.
“The gift Whale offers is the ability to ‘cope’ and function in highly pressurized situations until you can come up for air and reclaim your inspiration and clarity.
“When you still yourself and listen to the beating of your heart – that life-giving rhythm is like the identifying sounds Whale uses to identify their pod in nature. Whale asks, What does your heart tell you?”
